Under the Sea in the Young Toddler Classroom

Last week, Young Toddlers participated in a week-long Ocean Unit: Under the Sea!

Each morning, the Young Toddlers enjoyed molding and sculpting sand castles using Beach Sand Play-Doh and exploring sea shells of different shapes, sizes and textures. They used play fishing rods and nets to catch toy ocean animals: fish, lobster and crabs and enjoyed magnet fishing puzzles as well as ocean and/or beach related literature including "Sea, Sand, Me!" by Patricia Hubbell, "Beach Day" by Karen Roosa, "Rainbox Fish," by Marcus Pfister, "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" by Dr. Seuss and "All About Tide Pools" published by National Geographic.

During Circle Time, the Young Toddlers learned all about the ocean, beach and ocean animals, including fish, sharks, whales, star fish, sea horse, sea turtles, octopus, lobsters and crabs. They specifically learned each ocean animals' color, texture and diet!

During Art, the Young Toddlers created an ocean mobile by decorating either a yellow or purple fish with sparkly, rainbow scales; a green sea horse hiding in purple sea weed; or a sandy orange star fish. The Young Toddlers also created a "Gone Fishing" door sign using 3D ocean stickers as well as octopus puppets using brown paper bags, paint and googly eyes. The Young Toddlers practiced using their fine motor skills with a layered sand jar project. Each toddler took a turn pouring a layer of colorful sand into their small jar using a spoon! After their jars were filled to the top, their teachers helped seal them with a lid - topped with a 3D fish sticker!

The Young Toddlers also participated in a delicious cooking activity - fish cup cakes and a huge fish cake! The toddlers helped decorate both!
